Hi! WELCOME TO OUR BLOG! (below is stock pic of car we need for towing our microhome)
Here, you can see pics of our progress from start to current, on our build of our microhome, get to know a little bit about us and see pics of the vehicle we hope to buy ASAP- a used 2012-2016 Ford Expedition 4WD, with tow package and under 100,000 miles. Nothing fancy, just a sturdy workhorse to get us point A to B and back again, without too much trouble or maintenance over the next 3-5 years!
We started the microhome project during early months of pandemic lockdown (thank you COVID....NOT!) thinking it would keep us busy and distracted from the scary mess the world was being consumed by. Like much of the world, we had to cancel plans like job training I had been looking forward to participating in, we missed "normal" and we missed our friends.
The starting goal was just going to be a simple way to "camp out" in our own yard, but as I was scraping off the vinyl wrap from when I used the trailer for my Landscape Contracting business (for hours and hours and HOURS that turned into DAYS!- do NOT wrap a vehicle unless you intend it for life, or have stock in a dynamite company to blow the vinyl off! It is stuck to STAY, let me tell you!), it occurred to me that THIS could be the start of something REALLY useful!
I'd been wanting to take part in some out of state job training that could help me establish a new business, with earned income to support my family by, but out of state requires somewhere to stay, pet sitters to pay- things I cannot do with my limited low income. HERE IT WAS, the solutions to the hurdles, right in front of me! A MICROHOME! (Like a Tiny Home, only smaller)
I was able to find most of what I needed for a simple build right on our own property, re-purposing things we already had. An actual thank you to COVID for the stimulus payments allowing us to get things like paint, floorboards and insulation we needed for the build.
There are many pics of my boy working hard! This build is as much his as it is mine, either from the muscle and sweat he contributed or the time he entertained himself nearby so I could work on the more complicated aspects of the build uninterrupted. We have both sacrificed and learned equally. He picked up new skills and respect for power tools as well as a mini 6-pack that won't stop! and I've remembered more skills than I knew I had forgotten! It does now take me A LOT longer to do things with my differently-abled body than before, but I stick with it and get it done! It's been refreshing to get back into hard physical work!
We had, and needed, to take a break for the winter months. With more pleasant outdoor working weather now, we are back at it and hoping in a few months we will be ready for our first "camping out" practice in the yard! Being a differently-abled parent, things are never as simple as ABC. We'll need time to figure out how this will work best for us while we are still on familiar soil!
Once our family is comfortable in our ability to house temporarilly in our microhome, and we are able to buy a stout vehicle to tow it, we'll schlep our fur-family with us to save cost on pet-sitters and we'll be on the way to out of state training, and what I hope will result in a new business through which I can earn a sustainable living.
An added benefit to all this is being able to show my boy that with hard work, perseverance, stamina and a little help from friends and family, a person can do and be anything they set their mind on!
Stop by now and again to see new progress pics as we post them!
